• Jon Hickox, Founder, President & Board Chair

    Jon Hickox owns The Winery at Bull Run and Stonebridge Equestrian Center, neighboring the Manassas National Battlefield Park in Centreville, VA. The Winery at Bull Run, Fairfax County’s largest working farm, producing premium Virginia wines while preserving the area’s 19th-century history. Passionate about protecting the battlefield, Jon co-founded the Manassas Battlefield Trust to support the National Park Service.

  • Winston Watt, Board Secretary

    Winston spent four decades in Human Resources, including roles at Lockheed Martin and BAE Systems.  He along with his wife, also his business partner, operated a successful event venue in Warrenton.  Winston is a co-founder of the Warrenton Preservation Alliance which is dedicated to preserving the historic nature of the community.

  • Maureen Finnerty, Vice President

    Maureen is a founding member of the Manassas Battlefield Trust. She spent 30 years with the National Park Service serving as superintendent of Everglades and Olympic National Parks, and held other senior management positions in Philadelphia and Washington, DC.   She also taught history and government at the high school and college level, and worked for the US Senate. Since retirement she has remained active and involved with several national park and other non-profit volunteer groups.

  • Joseph Eaves

    Joseph Eaves is a former President of the Manassas Battlefield Trust and the lead lobbyist for a major business trade association in the Washington, D.C. area, concentrating on energy policy. His background includes leading government relations for the National Park Foundation and a portfolio in energy, environment, appropriations, science, technology, and Interior.

  • Kimball Brace

    Kimball Brace is President of Election Data Services, Inc., providing redistricting software, geographic and demographic databases, and technical support since 1977. Kim has served on the Prince William County Historical Commission, including a term as chairman and as the County’s General Registrar, and the Washington Capitals Fan Club. He is also involved in the Bull Run Civil War Round Table in Centerville.

  • Derek Mallett, Ph.D

    Derek Mallett is a historian specializing in prisoners of war, military intelligence, and public memory. He served as a historian for the Joint POW/MIA Accounting Command for three years and taught military history for the US Army Command and General Staff College for over a decade. He has published two books and several articles and book chapters. He has also led several military staff rides of the Manassas battlefield.

  • Mike Cafarelli

    Mike Cafarelli is a revenue and operations leader with more than twenty years of experience building and scaling high‑performing sales organizations. He has worked across transportation, logistics, and services businesses, leading enterprise and SMB sales, improving conversion and margin, and helping founder‑led and growth‑stage companies establish repeatable, predictable go‑to‑market systems.

    Known for translating strategy into execution, Mike focuses teams on the right accounts, activities, and metrics while strengthening alignment between sales and delivery. He splits his time between St. George, Utah, and the Nashville area, and stays active through golf, endurance training, and time with family. Outside of client work, he mentors leaders and teams, helping them “run the play, win the day.”

  • Thomas Croessman, Esq.

    Thomas Croessmann is the Founder and Chief Executive Officer of Croessmann & Westberg, P.C., which is a Construction and Real Estate Firm located in Tysons, Virginia. Mr. Croessmann started the firm in 2014 as a solo practitioner representing small contractors and developers. Over the years, Croessmann & Westberg has grown significantly and has recently been ranked by Inc. Magazine as one of the 5,000 fastest growing private companies in the United States for the second year in a row.  Outside of work, Mr. Croessmann enjoys spending time with his wife and two daughters.

  • Melissa A. Winn

    Melissa is the Director of Marketing and Communications for the National Museum of Civil War Medicine. Previously, she was the Marketing Manager for the American Battlefield Trust, and Director of Photography for HistoryNet, publisher of nine history-related magazines, including America’s Civil War, American History, and Civil War Times, for which she served as the primary photo researcher, photographer, and a regular writer. She’s a Senior Editor for Military Images magazine, with a regular column focused on women and the Civil War; Editor of Shavings, the member newsletter of the Early American Industries Association, is a member of the Board of Directors of the Civil War Roundtable Congress; and President of the Bull Run Civil War Round Table. She’s a member of the Professional Photographers Association, Authors Guild, Women's Relief Corps, and the Center for Civil War Photography.

  • Brandon Earhart

    Brandon Earhart retired from military service after 24 years in the U.S. Marine Corps and U.S. Coast Guard. He is currently working in special education for Prince William County Schools. Brandon is also the Commissioner for the Prince William Lacrosse Club, a non-profit focused on growing the game of lacrosse and expanding access to the sport. He can often be found exploring outside with his wife and 4 children.

    A. Scott Neese, Ph.D

    Scott Neese, PhD is VP and Scientific Advisor at 3D Enviro, LLC, an environmental remediation and consulting firm he founded in 2002. A previous President of the Manassas Battlefield Trust, Scott is a lifelong Civil War enthusiast who understands that battlefields are vital to understanding our nation's identity. Scott previously served as the President and Vice President of the Manassas Battlefield Trust.

  • John L. Nau, III, Emeritus

    John L. Nau, III serves as Chairman and CEO for one of the largest U.S. distributors of Anheuser-Busch products. Based in Texas, John is deeply involved in civic, community, and philanthropic efforts. He has chaired the Advisory Council on History Preservation and the Texas Historical Commission. He also sits on boards for the National Park Foundation and American Battlefield Trust. John established the Nau Foundation in 2007 and, supporting historic preservation and education initiatives.

Staff

  • Chérie L. Johnston, MBA, Executive Director

    Chérie holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Business Administration with dual emphasis in Economics and in International Business with the equivalency of a minor in Arabic, and an MBA in International Business from Chapman University.  Early in her career, Chérie completed nearly two years of Federal Internships with both the U.S. Department of Commerce, and the U.S. House of Representatives.  Moving into international operational roles within global exporting, she later joined Panasonic Avionics, where she spent over eleven years working in the aerospace sector, specifically on in-flight entertainment and satellite connectivity systems.  Further, in this capacity, Chérie led the Veterans Business Impact Program for all ten of the Panasonic companies in North America for several years.

    Additionally, Chérie led Military Children’s Charity for sixteen years as its Chief Executive Officer, where under her leadership, the organization delivered more than 140,000 gifts to U.S. military families, rescued and resettled seventeen Afghan refugees, supported dozens of bereaved families, and earned over thirty-five individual recognitions from the Department of War.  Chérie has also been deeply involved in military civic service, serving over 7 years as an Official Community Partner to the U.S. Army, and has been a Daughter of the American Revolution (DAR) since 2013, serving 4 years on her DAR chapter’s Board of Directors.  Finally, Chérie participated for over 6 years in NASA’s Space Propulsion Synergy Team (SPST), where she contributed to the composition of a long‑term U.S. national space plan which she presented to members of Congress and U.S. Government agencies.

  • Christy Forman, Grants & Programs Support Manager

    Christy Forman spent twelve years working for the National Park Service at Civil War sites Harpers Ferry National Historical Park, Antietam National Battlefield, and nearly four years as an interpretive park ranger and education coordinator for Manassas National Battlefield Park. During her time with the NPS she served on the management teams for seven different Civil War Sesquicentennial events. After her older son was born in 2016, she decided to leave her full-time position, with the hope of finding a way to remain involved in her passion of preserving and sharing the history of the Civil War. As such, she was thrilled to accept a position with the Manassas Battlefield Trust. She received her bachelor’s degree in history and historic preservation from Shepherd University, and a certificate in museum studies from Northwestern University.
